Notary Success Starts with Knowing Your State Laws

Before accepting any notary request, one of the most important steps you can take is to verify your state laws. Notary rules are not one-size-fits-all; each state has specific requirements that govern how you perform your duties.

In Oklahoma, for example, notaries must require personal appearance, meaning the signer must be physically present at the time of notarization. Proper identification is mandatory, and you cannot notarize documents if the signer is not competent or willing. Additionally, Oklahoma notaries are prohibited from notarizing their own signatures or documents in which they have a financial interest.

Ignoring these laws can result in invalid notarizations, legal penalties, or even the loss of your commission. On the other hand, taking time to review your state’s guidelines protects you, your client, and the integrity of the notarization.
