Notary Basics: What We Do & Why Your Preparation Matters

A notary public plays a critical role in preventing fraud. At its core, notary work is about verifying identity, witnessing signatures, and ensuring documents are signed willingly and knowingly. We don’t approve, draft, or give legal advice on documents. We serve as impartial witnesses to the signing process.

When you meet with a notary, your biggest responsibility as a signer is being prepared. That means bringing a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with a name that matches the document. If names do not match, or if the ID is expired, the notarization cannot proceed, depending on your state’s laws.

It’s also important to review your document before the appointment. Notaries cannot explain the contents or tell you what to sign; any blanks (unless allowed by law) or unanswered questions can delay or stop the notarization altogether.

Finally, all required signers must be present, alert, and willing. A notary is trained to stop the process if something doesn’t feel right.

Preparation saves time, money, and frustration. It helps ensure your notarization is valid the first time. When signers come ready, the process is smooth, professional, and stress-free. ✍🏽📄
